Default Tennis: Australian Open '09

For all those who like tennis, who do you think will win this year?

My prediction: Federer. This would be a great slam for him to tie Pete Sampras' record of 14 grand slam titles and an excellent way to start off this year for him. He looked calm and well prepared at the Kooyong AAMI Classic.

Anyways, who do you think will win?

No to both, as much as I would like to see either of them win. It will be either Nadal or Djokivic (however you spell his name)

Federer or Nadal, as per usual.

Rooting for Blake, but when he inevitably flames out in the fourth round, I'll be pulling for the Federer.

Nobody's mentioned the women's side - I say Safina.

Nobody has mentioned the woman's side because every year that is always up for grabs.

I'm not arguing that women's tennis is better than men's, but it's still usually intriguing to watch from about fourth round on. Besides, doesn't "up for grabs" mean it's worth watching to see who actually wins? If you're not a huge tennis fan you could entirely skip the men's tournament until the semis because you can make a list of 5 people (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Roddick), which at least 3 if not 4 of those will reach the semis. Speaking of which, can't wait for the Djokovic/Roddick quarterfinal match.

Of course, since I'm a tennis fan I'll be watching every day, but I appreciate the men's game and women's game on two entirely different levels - they don't even play remotely the same game.

No up for grabs does not mean it is worth watching it. It just means no one usually knows.

Mini-res! Nadal certainly deserved to win the final since he played a much better 5th set; Federer looked mentally out of it. Regardless, the next to last point of the match was a disgrace.

During the middle of a rally, a fan yelled that Federer's shot was out similarly to how a linesman would; Federer pulled up, Nadal hit a shot that Federer could have reached, instead it was a winner to set up another championship point. I know that things like that can be considered when deciding to replay a point, and the chair refused. Federer at least deserved that chance.

Either way, gg to Nadal as he most certainly still would have won, but it bothers me seeing such a great match marred at the end.

It was a very good and exciting match. Its all I can really say because both of them are extremely good players and both pushed each other to the end.
